Day 3: Rocks are COOL!

We woke up at 6am on day three, feeling surprisingly well-rested. Somewhere along the last stretch of our day two drive, the time zone had changed so it was actually 5am Las Vegas time. How we were even conscious at that hour is beyond me. But since it was still dark, we decided to drive out of town and watch the sun rise, which we managed to do after accidentally driving into at least one person’s driveway (stupid GPS). We both had images of a bunch of Navajo guys firing at us with rifles, so we got out of those driveways quick-smart!

I am an excellent photographer:

After breakfast, we set off for Monument Valley – even if you’ve never heard of it, you’ll definitely have seen it as the backdrop for Roadrunner, or a number of John Wayne movies (depending on your generation). This place was absolutely incredible, although very windy:

We drove our Taurus a few km along a dirt track (rendering it uninsured) to see some of this freakish scenery:

Can you imagine being an early settler or pioneer or whatever, walking through the desert, only to stumble across that? You would think it was devil country or something. Anyway, we were excited:

After that, we drove another 5h through some very dramatic scenery (frequently in heavy rain), weaving in and out of Arizona and Utah. Highlights included Glen Powell Dam (below), me getting the opportunity to drive, and spotting a cowboy in a servo. Exciting times. Tomorrow we’ll head to Zion National park, then Salt Lake City.
