The Never-Ending Day

Welcome to our USA road trip blog! I’m writing this first entry in LA Airport, where we’re experiencing a strange sense of déjà vu. Probably because we are sitting by a window at 8:30am on Wednesday the 7th September, watching planes being serviced, and something like 15 or 16 hours ago, we were sitting by a window at 8:30am on Wednesday the 7th September, watching planes being serviced. Different city, same thing. Except this time we’re a little more disheveled.

The flight over was actually really good, on the scale of long-haul flights. We started things off well by only having 21kg of luggage between us (oh yeah, are we gonna shop!), and I managed to get an aisle seat. Then things improved when we realized nobody was taking the window seat next to us! V Australia is a really good airline – mostly because all their stuff is new, but also because the Virgin sense of humour is apparent everywhere. On the backs of the tickets, the napkins, the tray table mats – even the safety video! In this, they said “if you’ve caught a plane in the last century, you’ll know that smoking is not permitted on-board”. The flight also had “mood lighting”, which meant the lights alternated between muted shades of purple, blue, yellow and green. I love a good gimmick.

The awesome thing about travelling with someone, in contrast with my usual nigel no-friends trips, is that you instantly have access to more sleeping room on the plane (courtesy of personal space invasion), more food (especially with Matt, since he only eats 50% of each meal), AND there is someone to mind your bags! So up to this point, the trip is already a step up from most others I’ve been on!

Pretty goddamn ready to leave this airport though. Only an hour and a half more waiting to do, then we’re on our way to Vegas! Hopefully the sizeable volume of diet coke we’ve consumed keeps us going till the end of the day…
